{"id":13214,"date":"2025-10-11T03:36:53","date_gmt":"2025-10-11T09:36:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theway.davisinterests.com\/wp\/?p=13214"},"modified":"2025-12-09T06:18:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T12:18:18","slug":"insights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theway.davisinterests.com\/wp\/insights\/","title":{"rendered":"Insights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Extracts from the <a href=\"https:\/\/biblical-studies-academy.circle.so\/c\/bible-nerd-chat\/the-did-jesus-see-himself-as-the-messiah-roundtable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Did Jesus see himself as the Messiah?&#8221;<\/a> roundtable post by Michael Waddell at BSA.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Note the contrast between the Jesus that the gospels describe and the Jesus they continually insist that he is. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jesus more-or-less <strong>committed suicide by cop.<\/strong> I [Jason Staples] think he intentionally got himself executed, because he thought he would be resurrected, and I think he&#8217;s reading that out of several prophecies that later Christians read together: the prophet like Moses in Deuteronomy who will be &#8216;raised up&#8217;, David&#8217;s seed that will be &#8216;raised up&#8217;, etc. If the big miracle [like Theudas saying he could part the Jordan River] Jesus is going to perform fulfills those sorts of things, it&#8217;s entirely plausible that an early Jewish teacher would conclude he was going to be &#8216;raised up,&#8217; as in &#8216;conquer death&#8217;. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Robyn [Faith Walsh] sees Mark and the other gospels as heavily influenced by Pauline theology, and <strong>any self-conception Jesus may have had is drowned out by the ideas of Paul<\/strong> and subsequent writers. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mark Goodacre did hedge a bit: &#8220;I think it&#8217;s a plausible inference that Jesus and JBap knew each other, but the way that the gospels have done this \u2014 <strong>bringing JBap onto the stage at the beginning and then having him replaced by Jesus \u2014 is an apologetic move<\/strong> to say &#8216;You might have heard of this guy JBap, but he&#8217;s not the one, it&#8217;s really our guy.&#8217; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jason Staples notes how odd it is that JBap is recording as doubting in Luke 7. &#8230; One possible conclusion is that JBap didn&#8217;t think Jesus was the Messiah. <strong>And Josephus doesn&#8217;t associate Jesus with John.<\/strong> I actually think that, well after the fall of the temple, there&#8217;s a JBap movement that&#8217;s a good bit stronger than the Jesus movement.&#8221; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8230;<em>in Mark&#8217;s passion narrative, the people connected with Jesus&#8217; arrest are always chief priests and elders. <strong>He&#8217;s made Pharisees the enemies all the way through the gospel, and then they&#8217;ve vanished, and we&#8217;ve got these new people called the chief priests<\/strong>, which really does link us again with the temple.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8230;in Mark&#8217;s passion narrative, the people connected with Jesus&#8217; arrest are always chief priests and elders. Paul speaks positively of the Temple and sacrifice (1 Corinthians 9:13; 10:18). uses Temple imagery to describe the church (\u201cyou are God\u2019s temple,\u201d 1 Corinthians 3:16); Refers to the Temple cult as divinely given (Romans 9:4\u20135). <strong>If Jesus had publicly condemned the Temple, Paul and Jesus\u2019s followers in Jerusalem would have known\u2014but they did not.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fredriksen suggests that the <strong>real sequence<\/strong> leading to Jesus\u2019s crucifixion was:\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>His <strong>triumphal entry<\/strong> at Passover, hailed as \u201cKing of the Jews.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pilate interpreted this as political sedition, a threat to Roman order.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jesus was crucified as a messianic pretender, though Pilate likely knew he was harmless.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>His disciples survived unpunished, showing Rome did not see them as dangerous.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus did not heal the man with a &#8220;skin disease&#8221; NRSVue [&#8220;leper&#8221; in KJV]  in Mark 1:40-45, he &#8220;cleaned&#8221; him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several critical scholars argue that&nbsp;<strong>Revelation 2\u20133&nbsp;reflects the author\u2019s&nbsp;disagreement with Pauline teaching<\/strong>, especially on idol-food and accommodation to pagan society.
