Jesus preferred the title “Son of Man” – Jim Palmer

“Christianity royally messed up by putting Jesus on a pedestal and creating a religion in his name. By doing so, the Christian religion practically made Jesus into a freak – virgin birth, sinless humanity, God in the flesh, blood sacrifice for humankind’s sins, resuscitated from death, and beamed into space-Heaven.

And then we are supposed to take seriously the idea of being like Jesus? What??? How can I be like someone whose biological Father was God Almighty? I’m pretty sure I’ve got a genetic disadvantage here.

Jesus did not say he is ‘THE’ son of God. He said he is ‘A’ son of God. In fact, when Jesus is called out because his claim is misunderstood as a statement of exclusivity, he says, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods”’ Further, in John 17, I don’t know how Jesus could have made it any more clear that the oneness he spoke of having with God is a oneness we ALL share in equally.

There’s a reason why Jesus preferred the title “Son of Man” and was referred to as the “second Adam”. They both are statements of solidarity with humankind. Jesus was a stand-in for the entire human race.

The point is that each of us equally (like Jesus) is a human embodiment of the one and only ultimate reality. Jesus came to the realization of what he was, and invited humankind to discover this for themselves.

The only difference between Jesus and anyone else is that Jesus figured it out. Jesus wasn’t the only one who figured it out. For example, Buddha figured it out. There is a witness to this oneness in virtually every religion, spirituality and philosophy. Even science attests to this in its understanding of the nature of the universe.

You may not believe in God or any ultimate reality, and may think this whole idea of being a human expression of something primordial and transcendent is a bunch of hogwash. Fine. I’m not trying to talk you into anything.

I’m just saying that I don’t get how Christianity managed to create a Jesus-religion based upon separation from God, and then making Jesus the God of the universe to be worshipped. In my view, by doing this Christianity has hidden and corrupted the very truth that Jesus said would liberate people.”
