The Empty Tomb

Christian Origins Jesus

This post contains short extracts that I felt were insightful.

  1. Mark 16.1–8. It is important to note that this is the first reference to an empty tomb; Paul does not mention it. Moreover, the way Mark tells the story has seemed to some scholars to suggest that the empty tomb story is a relatively late development: Mark tells us that the women who discovered the empty tomb didn’t tell anybody about it, thereby explaining why this story was not widely known.

  1. Luke 24.39–43; John 20.24–29, 21.9–14. It is interesting that Mark has no stories of the risen Christ appearing to his followers but only the story of the empty tomb. The other three gospels (all later) do have appearance stories, all different from each other. This is quite a change from the pre-Easter portions of the gospels, where there is considerable duplication and overlap. What to make of this difference is not clear.
